Improving your front door

  • Posted on June 20, 2010 at 7:08 am

Your front door is a room of its own. It is the first impression people have of your home. If you make your front door warm and appealing, that feeling will carry over as people enter into your home.

Here are some ideas to make your front door special

- Paint- Your front door should be the focal point of your home. Pick the color you paint your front door carefully. It is such a small area, you can do some unusual, yet dramatic things. Too many people seem to focus on painting the garage a special color. You do not want to highlight your garage. Let your garage blend into the house, and make the front door the focal point.

- Hang a Wreath. Wreaths exude warmth. You can make one by just bending a hanger and attaching foliage from your landscape. Or you can purchase one. Either way you go, you are making yourself and everyone else feel more welcome when they walk into your home.

- Polish any brass or chrome accessories. When we moved into our current house the brass was black on the door. My husband wanted to remove the brass and replace it, but I wanted to try and clean it. It took a long time, and lots of rubbing, but eventually that brass was restored to it’s pristine condition. What a difference that made.

Anything that you add to your front door that is shiny will look terrific. Keep an eye out for sales on things like decorative plates and knockers. For security purposes, a peep hole is always a good investment.

- Add plants next to the door. Plants make everything look better. We have a very small landing next to our front door, but even we were able to make room for just one plant in a substantial clay pot. It softens and accents this important area next to the door.

It doesn’t take much to make your front door a standout. Give it some thought. With spring approaching we begin thinking about home improvements. Front Doors are a place that you can make a big impact with a very little money.
